How to create a cozy space: Hygge lighting ideas

Embrace Hygge by thoughtfully choosing lighting that fosters relaxation and togetherness.

What is Hygge?

Hygge is a Danish lifestyle that focuses on the comfort of the soul and designing for connection. Hygge encourages slowing down and doing healing activities such as baking, gardening, or spending time with family and friends. Central to creating a hygge ambiance is the strategic use of lighting. Instead of relying on overhead lighting, use a mix of table and floor lamps with different color temperatures to achieve the perfect ambiance. Soft, ambient lighting creates a soothing atmosphere while cool lighting is best used for task-oriented activities.

Discover the types of lighting:

Diffused spread-out light: Use this for general lighting of the room or living rooms. Examples of diffused lighting include ceiling lamps or wall sconces. For the dining room, consider two pendant or wall-mounted lights. Overhead pendants should be 20-24 inches above the table to ensure that lighting does not obscure your face.

If you want a lamp with a warm and cozy vibe, check out the Akari Paper Ceiling Lamp 55A, made of Japanese made Washi paper, or the 55D, made of specially processed high quality paper.

Focused concentrated light: Concentrated lighting is used to help with specific activities like cooking or reading and when you want to highlight an artwork in your home. In the bedroom, opt for two bedside lamps with warm hues to create a cozy ambiance.

Our Crystal Flowerpot Table Lamp, features a touch dimmer for brightness adjustments, is rechargeable and portable, and would add a touch of elegance to both your bedroom or work area.

Downward lighting: Downward lighting provides focused illumination for areas like a reading nook or work table. Go for floor lamps or lamps with an enclosed shade. Choose lamps with textured shades made of materials like paper, fabric, or frosted glass. Textured shades can elevate the look of a lamp and room and diffuse light better.

An example of this is the Panthella Floor Lamp. With its lampshade made of opal acrylic, the Panthella Floor Lamp provides a warm and inviting ambiance to your living room.

Upward lighting: Upward light is used to supplement the general lighting in the room. Upward lighting can help a room feel larger and more open. Directing light upwards minimizes harsh shadows and creates a more even diffused light. Consider wall sconces and up lights to add depth and warmth.
