As a rule of thumb, the table and lamp together should stand about 58–64 inches tall. That keeps the bottom of the shade near eye level when you're seated. On a nightstand, pick a lamp roughly as wide as or narrower than the table. In a living room, a lamp on a side table next to the sofa should light the space without glaring into your eyes.
