Why You'll Love It

Some lamps light a room. The Harmony Glow changes it. Handcrafted from Japanese Unryu Washi (雲流紙) — cloud dragon paper — its translucent mulberry kozo paper and long, swirling visible fibers diffuse light in a way that feels less like illumination and more like atmosphere. 100% handmade. Strong enough to last, delicate enough to glow. Use it as a table lamp, a floor lamp, or simply the most beautiful thing in the room.

Contract grade

The Harmony Glow exists because most decorative paper lamps disappoint in person. They look fine in photos, then arrive thin, flat, and cheap — the kind of thing that makes a room feel more like a dorm than a considered space.

This lamp is the opposite. Crafted from authentic Japanese Unryu Washi paper — Unryu meaning "cloud dragon" — its long, irregular mulberry silk fibers scatter warm light into the room in a way that synthetic materials physically cannot. There are no hot spots. No harsh edges. Just a soft, luminous envelope of light that makes everything nearby look better.

The bamboo wire frame is structural and intentional — adding the quiet, imperfect elegance of wabi-sabi to the form. The silhouette itself is sculptural: a shape that holds the room's eye whether the lamp is on or off.

Contract-grade construction means it is engineered for longevity — used in hotels, restaurants, and studios that cannot afford fixtures that fail. Bring that standard home.

Light as an art form

You are not buying a paper lamp. You are buying a room that finally feels right.

The differences are in the details

Paper_Lamp_Making.png

10+ years of skills in every lamp

The makers behind our Harmony Glow have spent over a decade working with paper and natural materials. They understand how Washi fibers and papers behave under tension, how bamboo ages over time, how light moves through varying densities of material. This is embodied knowledge — the kind that does not come from a training manual.

The result is a lamp that passes a test most decorative lighting fails: it looks better in person than it does in photos. Better after a year than the day it arrived. The construction is tight, the proportions are considered, and the materials are real.

No Two Are Identical

The natural variation of Unryu washi's fiber patterns means every Harmony Glow lamp is singular. You are not ordering a unit from a catalog. You are acquiring a one-of-a-kind object.

Not all paper lamps are created equal

If you've ever ordered a paper lamp online and felt that sinking feeling when it arrived — you know exactly what we're building against. The Harmony Glow exists for those who are done settling for lamps that look right in photos and wrong in rooms.

Most paper lamps on the market use ultra-thin rice paper — harsh, flat, and fragile. It tears easily, emits cold white light, and looks exactly as cheap as it is once it's in your space. Our Harmony Glow uses beautiful Japanese Unryu Washi, a mulberry kozo paper with long, swirling natural fibers that diffuse warm light the way nothing else does. The difference isn't subtle. You see it the moment you switch it on.

Cheap paper lamps arrive deflated, wrinkled, and saggy — and they only get worse. The Harmony Glow is reinforced with a natural bamboo wire frame that holds the shade in its sculptural form permanently. No sagging. No warping. The shape you fell in love with is the shape it keeps.

A paper lamp is meant to create atmosphere — and nothing kills that faster than sloppy, uneven seams cutting across the shade. Every Harmony Glow is carefully handmade by artisans with over a decade of experience. The seams are cleaner, the proportions are more balanced.

This lamp is not for everyone — and that's the point. It's for the person who notices the difference between warm light and cold light. Who cares that the materials are real. Who wants a corner of their home to feel genuinely considered, not just decorated. The Harmony Glow is a design object first, a lamp second.

Why hüga?

Our Paper Lamps are Different

    • Expert craftsmanship: Our artisans have, on average, over 10 years of experience in paper lamp making. Because all of our paper lamps are handmade, each piece you receive is unique, and carefully constructed with lasting skill and care.
    • Made to last: Our paper lamps are all contract grade, meaning they were all made to last. While alternatives from other larger home retailers prioritize low price points - often at the expense of materials and finish - ours are thoughtfully designed and constructed to be durable, timeless, and quietly beautiful. Each artisan is specifically trained and guided to ensure every detail of our products reflects the care, precision, and quality we stand for.
    • Trusted quality: We work with the same manufacturer trusted by premium design retailers like Design Within Reach (DWR)—a name known for excellence in modern design.
    • Authentic materials: We use the best types of paper for our paper lamps. We source the paper used for our washi paper lamps from the same legacy supplier used in Noguchi’s original Akari designs, preserving the integrity of tradition and craft.
    • Design with intention: Every curve, fold, and fiber is considered—because to us, quality is not a feature; it’s a philosophy.
  • A well-made paper lamp can last for decades. Our paper lamps are built to contract-grade standards, meaning they are constructed for the durability required in commercial environments such as hotels, restaurants, and design showrooms — not just occasional home use.

Longevity ultimately depends on three factors: build quality, the environment the lamp is placed in, and ongoing care. To extend the life of your paper lamp, keep it in a space with stable, moderate humidity, avoid placing it near open flames, candles, or high-heat sources, and dust it gently with a soft brush as needed. With these simple precautions, your lamp is built to be lived with for years to come.

  • No, the paper used in our lamps was intentionally selected to be contract-grade — meaning it is built to resist tearing while still diffusing the soft, warm glow that makes paper lamps so inviting. The majority of our lamps use Japanese washi paper, a type of paper made from long mulberry fibers that has been prized for over a thousand years for its natural strength, flexibility, and luminous quality. Compared to the lower-grade rice paper used in many mass-market paper lamps, our paper is 2x more durable and significantly more resistant to tearing, yellowing, and warping. That said, like all delicate handmade products, paper lamps should still be handled gently — especially when moving, dusting, or installing.

  • All of our paper floor lamps and table lamps are compatible with standard E26 or E27 light bulbs, giving you flexibility to choose the bulb that best suits your space.

For ceiling pendant styles, the cord set is sold separately. Our shades are designed with a universal E-shape cord hook that securely attaches to any standard cord set on the market, so you can pair your lamp with the cord and bulb of your choice. For the most flattering glow, we recommend warm-white LED bulbs (2700K or lower), as LEDs emit minimal heat, protecting the paper shade and extending the life of your lamp.

  • Both options work — it's entirely up to you. Our paper pendants are designed with a universal E-shape cord hook that securely attaches the cord set to the shade, allowing you to pair your lamp with whichever cord set and bulb best suits your space. This means you can choose a hardwired cord set for a clean, ceiling-mounted installation, or a plug-in swag cord for tool-free setup — whichever fits your room and style. Cord sets are purchased separately unless otherwise noted on the product listing, giving you full flexibility to customize the look and function of your pendant.

  • We currently use 2 types of paper across our collection: cotton paper, and Japanese washi paper.

    • Cotton paper is sturdier than rice paper, making it ideal for more sculptural or complex lamp shapes that require added structure.
    • Japanese washi paper is known for its soft, serene diffusing effect. We source our washi from a heritage paper maker in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

Want to dive deeper into how our paper lamps are crafted? Read the full story here.

  • Please check the "Dimensions and Materials" section on its product description page.

  • To clean a paper lamp, gently dust the surface with a soft, dry brush, feather duster. Avoid water, cleaning sprays, or damp cloths, as moisture can warp the paper shade and leave permanent marks. For detailed folds or pleats, a soft makeup brush works well. Regular light dusting prevents buildup and preserves the lamp's appearance.

  • Yes, our paper lamps are designed for easy at-home assembly and most customers complete setup in under 10 minutes without tools. Lamps arrive partially assembled, typically requiring only the cord set attachment or shade-to-base connection. Every lamp includes illustrated step-by-step instructions, and our customer care team is available to help if any questions come up.

  • No, we are not affiliated with Isamu Noguchi or The Noguchi Museum. Our paper lamps are inspired by his iconic designs and pay tribute to their timeless beauty. But we’ve also added our own design elements in various details to help you create a warm, inviting home without the gallery-level price tag.
