Kumo Washi Paper Floor Lamp

Kumo washi paper floor lamp unlit, showing its sculptural cloud shape in a living room cornerKumo washi paper floor lamp lit, glowing softly in the same living room corner

Off and on

A sculptural piece first. A soft glow when you want one.

Kumo is a hand-shaped washi cloud — an object worth looking at before it is ever switched on. Turn it on and the whole shade lights evenly, giving the room its warmth instead of flooding it. Two real photos, same lamp, same spot. Only the switch changes.

Glow off A soft, hand-built form that holds the corner on its own — closer to a sculpture than a fixture.
Glow on Washi turns the bulb into an even, warm light. The same shape, now setting the mood of the room.

The 8pm problem

Overhead light makes 8pm feel like noon.

Most rooms have one light source: a ceiling fixture that flattens everything and leaves the corners cold. Kumo is for the hour you actually spend in the room.

Harsh, top-down glare

Light from the side, not the ceiling

Kumo sits low and glows through paper in every direction. Shadows soften, faces look rested, screens stop competing.

One bare bulb, one bright spot

The whole cloud lights up

Washi diffuses instead of transmitting. You never see the bulb — you see a lit shape, evenly, edge to edge.

A lamp that looks like a lamp

A shape you'd keep even unplugged

Hand-wired frame, hand-applied paper. Off, it's a soft sculptural object; on, it's the warmest thing in the room.

Close-up of the washi paper and hand-wired frame on the Kumo shade

Made by hand

Kumo means “cloud.” The shade is built the way clouds look — by hand, and never quite the same twice.

Each shade is made by artisans from authentic Japanese washi, stretched over a frame wired by hand. It's the same lantern-making tradition that turns electric light back into something closer to sun through a window.

Mitsumata washi (三椏紙) shade
Made from the inner bark of the mitsumata shrub. Its long fibers give a smooth, even face that softens light instead of yellowing it — small variations in texture are part of the piece.
Shaped seam by seam
Each shade is built by lantern artisans with a decade or more at the craft. The cloud curves demand it — every strip of washi is layered evenly around the mold by hand.
Metal stand, foot switch
A slim metal lampstand lifts the glow off the floor, and the switch sits underfoot — so turning the evening on doesn't mean reaching behind anything.
Click-together base
We redesigned the base so setup is a few easy steps: no confusing parts, no tricky alignment. Attach, add a bulb, plug in.

Why hüga

Not every paper lamp is made the same way

The shape is easy to replicate, and plenty of dropshippers, Etsy shops and Amazon listings do copy it. What they can't copy cheaply is the paper, the ribbing and the seams.

How big is it, really?

Kumo washi paper floor lamp glowing beside a bed, with height markers showing the lamp at 23 inches and the headboard at about 38 inches

Photographed beside a standard bed. At 23 in, Kumo sits well below the top of the headboard — a low floor lamp that puts the glow at bedside height instead of overhead.

Placement

Where Kumo earns its spot

A lamp for the hours after work — the sofa corner, the reading chair, the console in the hall. Anywhere you'd rather not turn the big light on.

Sofa corner

Fills the empty corner beside the armrest with a low, warm glow — the kind you settle into, not squint under.

Reading nook

Enough light to read by, gentle enough that you don't feel lit up.

Sideboard or console

Warms a long, flat surface that usually sits dark — the last light you leave on at night.

Good to know

Questions before you buy

How tall is it, really?

23 inches tall with a 16-inch shade — a low floor lamp rather than a tall one. It reads at about sofa-arm height, which is why it lights a corner instead of the ceiling.

Is the paper fragile? Will it tear easily?

No, the paper used in our lamps was intentionally selected to be contract-grade — meaning it is built to resist tearing while still diffusing the soft, warm glow that makes paper lamps so inviting. The majority of our lamps use Japanese washi paper, a type of paper made from long mulberry fibers that has been prized for over a thousand years for its natural strength, flexibility, and luminous quality. Compared to the lower-grade rice paper used in many mass-market paper lamps, our paper is 2x more durable and significantly more resistant to tearing, yellowing, and warping. That said, like all delicate handmade products, paper lamps should still be handled gently — especially when moving, dusting, or installing.

What type of bulb or cord set should I use?

All of our paper floor lamps and table lamps are compatible with standard E26 or E27 light bulbs, giving you flexibility to choose the bulb that best suits your space.

For ceiling pendant styles, the cord set is sold separately. Our shades are designed with a universal E-shape cord hook that securely attaches to any standard cord set on the market, so you can pair your lamp with the cord and bulb of your choice. For the most flattering glow, we recommend warm-white LED bulbs (2700K or lower), as LEDs emit minimal heat, protecting the paper shade and extending the life of your lamp.

Is it safe? It's paper around a bulb.

Kumo is UL safety certified. LED bulbs run cool, and the frame holds the bulb well clear of the paper.

Is the assembly process easy?

Yes, our paper lamps are designed for easy at-home assembly and most customers complete setup in under 10 minutes without tools. Lamps arrive partially assembled, typically requiring only the cord set attachment or shade-to-base connection. Every lamp includes illustrated step-by-step instructions, and our customer care team is available to help if any questions come up.

How do I clean my paper lamp?

To clean a paper lamp, gently dust the surface with a soft, dry brush, feather duster. Avoid water, cleaning sprays, or damp cloths, as moisture can warp the paper shade and leave permanent marks. For detailed folds or pleats, a soft makeup brush works well. Regular light dusting prevents buildup and preserves the lamp's appearance.

How long do paper lamps last?

A well-made paper lamp can last for decades. Our paper lamps are built to contract-grade standards, meaning they are constructed for the durability required in commercial environments such as hotels, restaurants, and design showrooms — not just occasional home use.

Longevity ultimately depends on three factors: build quality, the environment the lamp is placed in, and ongoing care. To extend the life of your paper lamp, keep it in a space with stable, moderate humidity, avoid placing it near open flames, candles, or high-heat sources, and dust it gently with a soft brush as needed. With these simple precautions, your lamp is built to be lived with for years to come.

How do I know what kind of paper is used on my lamp?

Please check the "Dimensions and Materials" section on its product description page.

How are you different from other paper lamp sellers?
  • Expert craftsmanship: Our artisans have, on average, over 10 years of experience in paper lamp making. Because all of our paper lamps are handmade, each piece you receive is unique, and carefully constructed with lasting skill and care.
  • Made to last: Our paper lamps are all contract grade, meaning they were all made to last. While alternatives from other larger home retailers prioritize low price points - often at the expense of materials and finish - ours are thoughtfully designed and constructed to be durable, timeless, and quietly beautiful. Each artisan is specifically trained and guided to ensure every detail of our products reflects the care, precision, and quality we stand for.
  • Trusted quality: We work with the same manufacturer trusted by premium design retailers like Design Within Reach (DWR)—a name known for excellence in modern design.
  • Authentic materials: We use the best types of paper for our paper lamps. We source the paper used for our washi paper lamps from the same legacy supplier used in Noguchi’s original Akari designs, preserving the integrity of tradition and craft.
  • Design with intention: Every curve, fold, and fiber is considered—because to us, quality is not a feature; it’s a philosophy.
What if it doesn't work in my space?

You have 30 days to return it, and a 365-day warranty on the lamp itself. Full details — including return shipping and restocking — are on our returns page.
